PA Day Hockey Scrimmages at Heads Up Sports Academy

Looking for a fun and active way to spend PA Days? Join us at HUSA for high-energy hockey scrimmages designed to keep players moving, learning, and having fun.

At Heads Up Sports Academy (HUSA), our scrimmages give players maximum ice time, a great workout, and a game-based learning experience. Depending on attendance, we run 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 formats to keep the pace high and involvement constant.

Why Scrimmage?

Scrimmaging is one of the best ways for young players to develop:

  • Encourages creativity – Unstructured play allows players to try new skills and make plays on their own
  • Builds conditioning naturally – Players stay active without even realizing how hard they’re working
  • Promotes confidence and fun – Kids enjoy playing “shinny-style” hockey while improving their skills

When We Run It

Our scrimmages run throughout the school year, including:

  • PA Days
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Break
  • Family Day
  • March Break
  • Easter Monday

Who Can Participate

Open to players of all levels, from house league to rep.

  • Players are grouped by age and skill level
  • Each session features balanced teams (A, B, and C lines)
  • Teams are adjusted each session to keep competition fair
  • Goalies and a referee are included

Players must bring a light and dark jersey.

How Our Scrimmages Work

Our format focuses on development, safety, and flow.

Game Structure

  • Play starts with a face-off
  • After goals or whistles, the puck is quickly put back into play
  • Line changes occur on a buzzer (approx. every 90 seconds)
  • Ideal roster: 9–15 players per team

Rules & Play Style

  • Minimal stoppages to keep the game moving
  • No traditional icing/offsides (or quick turnover instead)
  • Equal ice time for all players
  • Focus on pace, creativity, and decision-making

Safety

  • Full equipment required
  • Gloves must be worn at all times
  • Only major infractions are called
  • Dangerous play will result in removal from the ice

Goalies

  • Goalies may rotate throughout the session to support development and participation
