Heads Up Sports Academy was founded by Leo Paone, whose lifelong commitment to education and hockey development has shaped the program since its beginnings in 1994.

With a background as a retired educator from the Hamilton‑Wentworth Catholic District School Board, Leo has always approached coaching through a teaching lens, focusing on structure, accountability, and long-term growth. His experience extends beyond the classroom and rink, as he continues to serve as a Hockey Canada and Ontario Minor Hockey Association course facilitator and coach certifier.

Over the past three decades, Leo has led the Academy through its evolution, from PHL Academy to Ancaster Hockey Academy, and now Heads Up Sports Academy, building a program grounded in consistency, development, and a clear philosophy.

At the core of his approach is a simple belief: players grow the most when they are challenged. By encouraging athletes to step outside their comfort zones, embrace mistakes, and stay committed to improvement, Leo has helped develop not only better hockey players, but more confident and resilient individuals.

Today, that vision continues to guide HUSA as it supports players of all levels in reaching their full potential, on and off the ice.
